Sara Ross: There’s a pretty set group of rules that govern how divorce works in Colorado. It’s the Rule of Civil Procedure 16.2. There are specific things that have to happen in every divorce that start with a petition that opens the case and lets the court know that you want to have this done, and it ends when there’s either an agreement or a trial that decides all the issues in the case, and in between, there are a number of things that can happen depending on what each person needs. There is always financial disclosures. Everyone is required to exchange information so that everyone is really clear what the financial picture of the family is, and if there are children, there’s a lot of kid-related stuff that has to be worked out, but typically it’s a pretty standard road map. What can happen in between varies a lot depending on what a particular family needs.
